Mutula Shakur was politically active since his teen days. He was a member of the Black Liberation Army. In addition to his political works, Mutulu was a licensed and certified acupunterer.

Chinua's father founded and directed the Black Acupuncture Advisory Association of North America and the Harlem Institute of Acupuncture. Sadly, Mutulu died at the age of 72 on July 7, 2023, after being diagnosed with bone marrow cancer.

Shakur was sentenced to 60 years in prison for his involvement in the Brink robbery where two policemen and a guard died. He sought reduced sentencing in 2019 but was denied. 

Later, Chinua's father, Mutulu, was granted parole on November 10, 2022, due to deteriorating health. Shakur was released on December 16, 2022, after serving 38 years. However, he died after 8 months of parole.

Chinua Shakur's Step-Sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, Legal Battles

Sekyiwa Shakur has been in some legal battles. She filed a lawsuit against the executor of their mother's estate, Tom Whalley in January 2022. According to Sekyiwa, Whalley has already paid himself over $5 Million from Amaru Foundation.
